A lot of people are under the impression that Apple computers are safer than Windows computers.  I think they feel that because there is no malware therefore there cannot be any malware.  That's a lot like saying because I built my house where there is no tornado, therefore this summer there won't be any tornadoes.  It's not the tightest argument I've heard..

This is a very interesting read: http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/03/14/pwn2own-2011-results/

For those of you too lazy, let me give you a quick summary.

pwn2own is a sponsored annual event in the computer security community.  HP is the sponsor.  People (aka 'Hackers') come and compete win.  If you hack a platform you win a prize.  This year we tried IE, Safari, Chrome (browser), Firefox  iPhone4 , BB Torch 9600 with BB OS6,  Windows Phone 7 and an Nexus S running Android.

If you are a Gmail user you may miss being able to set it as your default email handler in Windows (or OSX).

If you've ever seen an error when you click on an email link or use a 'send by email' type function in some softwares, you need to set a default email application for your Operating System.

There are a number of ways to do this but the easiest I've seen so far comes from Google itself.  Install a small free app and follow the instructions and you'll be done in under 5 minutes :)

Hop on over to Google's help page, follow along and enjoy!

Have you ever gotten a reply from someone's email while they were on vacation?  Did you ever want to tell people who emailed you that you were out of the office for an afternoon or even a few days?  This will tell you how to do that!   (It's also great for pointing people to a new email address you're using*)

*Note the old address must be on [or, if you own the domain name, transferred to] a cPanel account

The following is a brief tutorial on how to do just that with cPanel.  To start ....

John  Sciacca is a columnist/blogger over at Residential Systems.  He's got a great (if somewhat long) rant about an article written in the NY Times' Home Tech section.

Seems this 'journalist' Farhad Manjoo does a write-up on universal remotes in the Times and, quite frankly, the guy gets it all WRONG.  Imo, Farhad is a boob and should put down the pen/keyboard when it comes to electronics and tech.  He couldn't be doing his readers (and my industry) a greater disservice.  And I note that Farhad's article can't be commented on.  I won't make any assumptions why...

Here's John's article: http://www.residentialsystems.com/blog/53888.aspx#

Here's the NY Times article in case you missed the link in John's article: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/20/garden/20hometech.html?_r=3&pagewanted=all

And for the record - I'm a professional URC programmer and dealer and I'm insulted by Farhad's misinformation.   That MX980 + MSC400 John talks about for example, is a ROCK SOLID KICK ASS SETUP.
- BUT -
I also sell an MX450 with a simple base station for $450 which is very affordable.  For smaller, less complex systems* on a budget this setup gets the job done sweet and simple, works every time and your mother-in-law could use it.  Period.  Farhad, get your head out of your ass and come join us in the 21st century.  We have professionals here and some of our stuff actually works. :)

Want to know more?  Wanna know if it's right for you?  Call me or send an email.

*What's a smaller system?  If you have, for example, a TV, a receiver, a cable box, and a DVD or Blu-Ray player, I consider that a smaller system.  Got a PS3 or an XboX or Wii.  Still ok.  What's bigger?  Well it kind of depends but in roundish terms, more than 4 or 5 sources or more than one or two small zones.  For that you might need to step up, but your best bet is to just ask me

This is the text of an email I received from DemandProgress.org.
(Demand Progress is a legitimate agency, recognized by the EFF and working on good causes and protecting our rights)
Read the message below, heed the message below, and go sign the petition!

Don't wait, do it now!

Joel,

Imagine the cops rifling through your mail, your calendar, your receipts. All your private information, available for them to look through. To do this offline, they'd have to get a warrant from a judge and break into your house. But every day the cops -- and anyone else with a good lawyer! -- get access to your online email and calendar just by asking.

Major online service providers like Gmail and Facebook just hand over your personal data to the police when they get a legal request -- usually without even telling you they've done so! And since you never know about the request, you never get a day in court to challenge it. Your privacy is gone before you even know it.

Click here to tell Google and Facebook that if they're going to store your private information, they need to promise to keep it private!

Twitter has just taken a bold stand to protect its users' privacy. When the US Government demanded they turn over information about people affiliated with WikiLeaks, they told the people affected and now they have the chance to challenge the request. But Facebook and Google are refusing to do the same! Sign our petition demanding they -- and other major Internet companies -- adopt sensible privacy protections and stop turning over your personal data to anyone who asks.

Tell Google and Facebook that they need to follow Twitter's lead and protect our privacy.  We're meeting with Google later THIS WEEK, and will deliver the petition then.

Thanks for taking a stand.

-- The Demand Progress team

P.S.  We're meeting with Google later this week, and want to have as many people as possible signed on by then.  Could you forward this email to your friends?
